For the Flex project, I chose to interview my father. I wrote about how my dad and his family came to live in the United States. He shared things I never knew about my grandparents. For one, I never knew about their struggle to come here and how they were finally reunited as a family. I also wrote about the language barrier when he came to this country and how homesick he was.
His upbringing was different than mine. He shared how he didn't have things I take for granted. For example, he didn't have a comfortable home and shared a room with his four siblings. I also wrote about how he did not have his parents take care of him for the first seven years of his life. I can't imagine how that feels.
It was interesting learning about his upbringing. It's good also to see how through generations we have been able to change things for the better. For example, we are able to live the American dream by going to college and becoming whatever we want. At the same time its good to look back so we can appreciate what we have now.
