I interviewed my partner on their experience as an immigrant coming into this country when he was 10 years old. I enjoyed this interview and got to have a long and interesting conversation on the ways that it has effected them in a positive way. Their reasons for migration are similar to what we discussed in class, as in needing to come to this country to leave conditions that were no good in their own country. Their experience knowing that being over there at this age would have been way different versus being here now has taught me a lot. I am glad to have had this conversation and learn more about him as a person. They still feel so connected to their own cultutre even while being here and assimilating fully into American culture. He described that having friends from his culture around him, has kept him grounded. I found it nice to hear that when they go back to their country they feel nostalgic and love going over there to feel a sense of his roots. This made me learn how impactful immigration is and it can positively infulence someones life and give people a future that they could never have imagined back at home. This class has taught me about the people around and myself as I realize the way being born here has effected the way I am as a person. This interview was extremely insightful.
Hi Amanda! This was such an enlightening and sweet post about your interview. Although it may be difficult to immigrate and assimilate to a completely new culture in order to have a better life, it is important to still have a connection to where you come from. It is so great to hear that your partner is be able to go back to their home country, as some are never able to go back. Your partners story can relate to many people who have immigrated and it's so important to point out the positive impact to has had on them.
